Scum Fuck Flower Boy is the 26 year old former Odd Future member’s most thematically excellent and consistently compelling yet, with a roster of impeccable guest features, from the likes of Frank Ocean and ASAP Rocky, to even Steve Lacy, Lil Wayne and even Corinne Bailey Rae. It’s a visual album in a different sense, with it’s cinematically rich narratives and instrumentation, that really add a bit of weight to the rapper’s comments off a Larry King interview a couple of years ago, that saw him express his dreams for his name to stand among the likes of directors like Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino, instead of other alike hip-hop artists.

“It puts you in this box. … I’m talented enough to do other things. I don’t know, I’m pretty bored with it. It’s not interesting. In the future, I want to do films. I want people to mention my name next to Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino. I don’t want my name to be mentioned next to other rappers at all.”

On Scum Fuck Flower Boy, Tyler subverses the hip hop artist trajectory he thought he felt trapped in, turning the music into a breathing world of life that demands visual accompaniment.
