The first part of this episode was an interview with Dirk Raupach, today I would like to present you some releases of the catalog, so you can see the great variety Tonzonen has to offer.
At the end of the article, you will also have the chance to enter a giveaway for one of the releases.
Barrows – Obsidion (2017, 2-LP set, limited to 500 copies)
Barrows is an LA-based Post-Rock band, Obsidion is their third album and comes with this beautiful minimalist black and white cover and 2 LPs. The D side is deliberately left blank: Obsidion is an instrumental concept album which depicts the experience of a man who is abducted from earth and brought to ”Obsidion”, a place where time and dimension are elusive and the boundaries of human consciousness no longer exist. And this album is mind-bending indeed: Obsidion offers a dark, heavy and sprawling soundscape, ranging from calm, atmospheric ambient moments to fierce and explosive riffs.
Volvopenta – Yoshiwara (2017, inside-out cut, limited to 500 copies)
Volvopenta hails from North-Rine Westphalia, Germany and consists of four people. The album comes with a beautiful artwork and has a peculiar feature, which I have never seen before: It’s an inside-out cut, that means it the records starts where usually the lead-out groove is and ends at the beginning of the record.
Yoshiwara is hard to describe: Post-Rock, Noise-Rock, Neo-Kraut, Neo-Psyche with a tinge of Grunge come to my mind – Volvopenta create a haunting and intense wall of sound that takes some time to be fully absorbed, but it offers a splendid hypnotic experience.
Knall – Raubkatze auf 12 Uhr 2LP (2017, 2-LP set, purple vinyl, limited to 500 copies)
Knall is a German-based conglomerate of improvisational musicians from Cologne. Being predominantly a live-band, their improvisational talent always shines through on their records: The content is as colorful and bright as the cover. Raubkatze auf 12 Uhr (which translates to feline predator at 12’o clock) is an intriguing blend of Space Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Experimental Rock with a generous pinch of funk. Highly recommended!
Sounds Of New Soma – La Grande Bellezza (2017, 2-LP set, orange marbled vinyl, limited to 500 copies)
Dirk Raupach, the founder of the label, has his own band called Sounds Of New Soma – La Grande Bellezza is the third album and as the cover suggests, it offers Cosmic Sounds at it’s finest. The 2-LP set provides some timeless evocative Neo-Krautrock trip. We have erverything from dreamy hazy ambient tracks like “Schwurbel”, and “Schönheit” and “Duftnote” to some more driving drum-heavy tracks like “Bundesgartenschau ’71” – which reminds me of some of the great Neu! tracks – and “Spandau”, which is also one of my favorites with the Saxophone being present.
La Grande Bellezza is a great album for everyone who likes Space Rock and Krautrock and it’s definitely one of my favorites this year.
Cholo Visceral – Vol. II (2016, 2-LP set, blue vinyl, limited to 500 copies)
This band has definitely the most interesting origin: Cholo Visceral is an experimental Prog & Psych Rock sextett from Lima, Peru. The album starts off incredibly hard and heavy with the 12-minute “Explosión del Misti” – brutal guitar riffs mix in with some freaked out saxophone play. By this time we know we are in for an intriguing ride. The record ranges from Heavy Prog to Noise and droney Ambience with an Avantgarde Free Jazz approach – even though it’s a bit too heavy for my taste at some points, it is an outstanding and captivating album.
Weites Luftmeer – Siebenunddreißigachtundvierzig (2016, limited to 500 copies)
Weites Luftmeer is a Psychedelic Shoegaze band based in Munich, Germany and this is their second album with beautiful artwork. Kim (bass, drums and hammered dulcimer) and Jochen (guitars, effects and berimbau) deliver four trippy tracks which are geared to each other and offer perfect Psychedelia, Space Rock and Shoegaze. Distorted guitars are accompanied by floating dreamy effects and make this an engaging listen from start to finish.
Autumn Of Pækward – Cern (2016, translucent vinyl, limited to 500 copies)
Jochen Koch, a Neo-Krautrock & Ambient artist is based in Leipzig and Cern is the second album he released. I love the minimalist approach the record offers -the title is a nod to the The European Organization for Nuclear Research. This delivers the basis for this project of sound and composition.
The story of this institution is also featured on the album in the vocals of the track “Wardrobe” – but the record is not predominately about Cern, it can be seen as an journey to the atom itself – and what would be more fitting than the etheral spacey soundscape this album offers?
“Canteen” made me immediately fell in love with this record: we have beautiful electronic ambience with a marvellous use of female yearning vocals. Drone moments, hypnotizing guitar play, and a Philharmonic orchestra which is contributing some parts give this record a vast and epical feel. This record might be my favorite out of the bunch.
Lubianka – Cerimònies (2016, limited to 500 copies)
Lubianka is a band from Barcelona, Spain which mixes Psychedelia with Experimental music and Jazz vibes. Cerimònies is the second album and offers hypnotic heavy psychedelic rock with some jazz elements. The track Ouroboros shows this blend the best: relaxed organ play meets heavy Psychedelic guitar riffs. This album is heavier than it looks, sometimes even a bit too much for my taste – but if you are into Heavy Psych prog, this is definitely worth a listen.
I hope those records gave you a nice overview of the great range Tonzonen has to offer. They are constantly releasing interesting albums, right now they have the releases of The Spacelords, Vespero and Les Lekin coming up and their catalog is always worth checking out.
