22 Jul Talking with Grassae ahead of Fred Perry’s second Music Woven In series
Since June 2019, Fred Perry the global fashion and music purveyor had taken up residency at White Label Records with MUSIC WOVEN IN – a series of gig-sessions spotlighting the brand’s newest collections and the stories they tell, paired with the sounds of music genres they reflect.
Following up on their successful launch of the Monochrome collection, the second installment features THE FRED PERRY X AMY WINEHOUSE FOUNDATION COLLECTION. Inspired by Amy’s original designs for us, and her iconic tattoo from Henry Hate, the latest collection sees classic pieces adorned in love hearts.
Up on deck duties for the event to compliment the night is Grassae. We caught up with the Singapore based DJ ahead of her set. Catch the interview below.
1. How long have you been working on music?
Growing up, I played the flute quite seriously and also dabbled in the children’s choir…so I’d say musically involved for a pretty long time. I went a little off tangent during architecture school but still sort of remained working around music, basically through set design work at Boiler Room & Sublimate NYC.
2. What got you into DJing for parties?
This happened quite accidentally tbh – I was always a restless kid which translated to a lot of late nights out at various parties. Once in a while, I made mixes for people who were special to me and uploaded them to SoundCloud. My friends Chantal & Sant (Horizon99), asked if I wanted to play a set for their party at Gilman Barracks –I had so much fun with the crowd and continued on since then. It’s nice to have some creative output to share.
3. Who are you inspired by?
I love unapologetic contemporary divas like Ari, Amy, Bey, Britney, Cardi, Whitney, Mimi, Nicki, Riri. It’s an empowering experience listening to their versatility through the different remixes, they basically sound good all the time and can hold their own.
4. Tell me about your favorite performance venues
I’m fond of makeshift venues because there tends to be more room for improvisation. At the same time, door policies are also important for a cute and safe space. No single place stands out except for one when I went to an abandoned school…
5. Name one musician you would love to work on a track with and why
It would be a tie between Princess Nokia and Total Freedom. I just really admire their work as independent artists through the years and I would learn so much from them.
6. What can we expect from your upcoming set at MUSIC WOVEN IN at White Label Records?
My short attention span is to blame for my messy sets. It’s still coming together atm but hopefully a lot of upbeat femme energy.
