Record Store Day Indonesia 2017: Elevating the RSD Experience and The Drive to Bring RSD Back to Its Roots

After a sixth consecutive year of celebration, Record Store Day made its return bigger than ever in Indonesia. Happening in no less than 24 cities across the nation with 69 exclusive RSD releases in vinyl, CD and cassette formats, Record Store Day Indonesia has evolved since 2014 into more than just a record trade fair. It also now holds host to limited releases for local bands, gigs, talk shows and exhibitions. Previously, Record Store Day Indonesia was only celebrated as a record trade fair in Aksara Kemang, right up til 2012 when Bangkutaman launched as the first artist to release limited RSD copies of their 2003 album Love Among The Ruins in CD format.

The following years, numerous household names in the Indonesian indie music scene started adding their names in a long list of exclusive releases.

In 2014, the “Record Store Indonesia” brand was used for the first time as an official organizer. Held in Ex-Duty Free Kemang and Heyfolks! Shop Jakarta was the first official Record Store Day Indonesia, with the finally-sighted-proper-RSD-queue for SoreSsstt/Jawab Nurani 7” vinyl.

Not only was there finally a vinyl release, but the number had increased greatly in more than tenfold; 23 exclusive releases and an expansion to other big cities like Bandung, Solo, Malang and Makassar. Substore had their grand-opening as the very first record store located in the newly built 2nd floor of Pasar Santa, that also held a modern market that served fresh groceries in the basement.

And that was the start of the #santamusiclub movement. Famous for being packed with hipsters and purveyors of the highbrow culture, its non-air conditioned atmosphere (I carried a pocket portable fan around my neck every time) and reluctance to provide wifi only lead to authenticity of the experience. A couple years after, the 2016 iteration took place in Pasar Santa with 48 exclusive releases and 20 performers, featuring the likes of Stars & Rabbit, Polka Wars, Sisitipsi, Piston, Avhath and Terapi Urine.

This year was the first year for Jakarta to have 2 separate RSDs.

Record Store Day Indonesia was the first to start in 21 – 22 April 2017 in Kuningan City Jakarta. For the first time, queueing and digging was conveniently done in a lavish big hall located in an air-conditioned shopping mall. The decision was based on an organizer’s initiative to elevate the RSD experience from previous years by relocating it to a more comfortable and strategic venue. More than 50 stores participated in the record fair section, but only a few accepted debit and credit card payments. That made it a little bit of a hassle to withdraw cash, since the hall is located a steep 10 LEVELS above the ATM centre.

The second Record Store Day that happened for the first time in Jakarta was Record Store Day Jakarta 2017. Held at Pasar Santa and Blok M Square on 22 – 23 April, Record Store Day Jakarta organizers went for bringing back RSD to its roots. With “To bring crowd back to record shops” as it’s slogan this year, most store owners decided to stay in their own stores.

Agus from Warung Musik, who was also one of the earliest store owners in Blok M, stated that the previous year, they collectively held it in Pasar Santa and were on a mission of introducing Santa as a growing music market at the time, but as a store owner had some reservations pertaining to logistics and sizing restraints.

“But for Blok M store owners it is impossible to bring all of our stuff to a different place. Moreover they only provided a single table for the exhibition”, claimed Agus.

Well, if you look at most of Blok M stores, you’d agree on how difficult it is to even sort such big amount of records for each seller.

“Also, we needed to cover the cost of transporting the records to the venue and it still takes some time to set-up,” he added.

With my experience in 3 different venues, I saw that each venue has a different market.

Blok M is well-known for their loyalists. Most of them were long-time sellers from Jalan Surabaya and Taman Puring (both are Jakarta’s famous thrift and antiques spots), so the buyers were also already their long-time supporters, all from teenagers to even older adults. While RSD in Santa appealed to more a youth demographic, offering 26 live performances including Stereomantic, AlaskaQ, Gorilla Trampoline, Zealspeaks and Racun Kota, as well as having a Vinyl Attack art exhibition, record auction and free flow of bottled tea.

When I spoke to Satria Ramadhan from the organizers of Record Store Day Indonesia, he explained that while he knew that some store owners would like RSD to switch back to store activities, he recognized the need to also focus on online stores for Record Store Day Indonesia.

“Frankly speaking, RSD happened in other cities as well, and here we also accommodate to online sellers who usually transact via Instagram, forums and other eCommerce platforms to reach their market offline.”

Personally, my take on this is that at the peak of records production and transaction, One single concept is unable to cater to the needs of various type of diggers and collectors within one place in a 2 day event. What is to always be celebrated in every Record Store Day, is that there are many who do genuinely care about vinyl culture, and who put their hearts and souls to preserving the physical records and help make the vinyl revival last even longer than we ever thought.

It’s a given to have 2 different Record Store Days in one city. There’s no science of it being fundamentally right or wrong there. But to me, as long as the mission is still the same; to help promote and bring a wider crowd back to record store activities all while it being supported by exclusive limited releases, then I think we’ll be alright. And that’s worth fighting for.
