Oh Wonder talks about their favorite vinyl & more in an exclusive interview with #vinyloftheday
Oh Wonder are a London-based alternative pop duo consisting of Anthony West and Josephine Vander Gucht. Since releasing their debut self-titled album in 2015, they have seen international success and amassed a huge following of fans. Then in July 2017, the duo released their second album, Ultralife. Both albums were entirely written, recorded, produced and mixed by the duo and have received cross-platform success.
Oh Wonder was recently in Singapore as part of Universal Music Singapore‘s Music Is Universal line up. It was a one-night invite-only show featuring Juan Karlos, Charlie Lim, Jeremy Zucker, and Oh Wonder. We at #vinyloftheday managed to sit down with the alt-pop duo and talk about vinyl records, their latest single ‘Hallelujah’ and more. Check out the interview below.
To start out, what’s the last song you listened to?
Josephine : I’ve been listening to the Spice Girls lately.
Anthony : Hey, Ma by Bon Iver.
Do you have a favorite vinyl record?
Anthony : My favorite vinyl is In Rainbows by Radiohead.
Josephine : I knew you were gonna say that.
We’ve read that you give yourself self imposed deadlines for your tracks, do you still practice this habit?
Anthony : We’ve written a lot more songs recently in a short span of time. I think it’s really good to have deadlines, right?
Josephine : 100%. Yeah, we apply that to most things now. We’re like “we have to finish the album by this date.” So, we work really well under pressure for sure.
What’s one of the most memorable moment you’ve had in a live performance?
Josephine : I had a really good one last night. A guy held up his phone, which said “Please sign my shoe.” I was like “Okay!”
Anthony : Festivals are always really fun.
Josephine : The last time we played in the Phillipines actually, in Manila. It was an unbelievable show. We all cried. Even our sound guy cried. He was like, “This is a really emotional show.” Everyone was very involved and invested. You know the crowd had made little signs that they held up. We’ve got a song called “Plans” which has a lyric like “gonna build a paper plane” and everybody threw like hundreds of paper planes on stage at that show. It was a really interactive show where it was as much their performance as it was ours and it felt incredibly special. So yeah we’re excited to come back to Asia and tour for sure. It’s like the best place to play shows.
The music video for Hallelujah was directed by Gregory Ohrel & made in a single shot with no cuts. Could you share a little insight on the experience ? (Including your favorite moment)
Josephine : That was such a cool shoot to do.
Anthony : It was. It was quite a risky one obviously cause we had to get the shot. We had to basically see if we could be lifted up for three and a half minutes.
Josephine : It’s really tiring. So we were like in training for six weeks and then had two days of rehearsals before the video shoot. And on the day, it was so scary because we got like thirty new dancers that morning.
Anthony : So everyday they top it up, with more dancers.
Josephine : The director was like “we need more, we need more people” and so thirty new people came in and obviously they don’t know the song, they don’t know the moves. So we were there trying to teach them and it got to like 8pm that evening on the last shoot day of the shoot. There’s like two hundred people on set and everyone knew we’ve got to be off set in half an hour and Gregory the director was like “we haven’t got the shot.” We’ve got two costumes that we can use because it ends in the water. So once we get dunked in the water we obviously has to wait for our costumes to dry, redo all our hair and make up, it was very difficult.
Then in the last half an hour, Gregory was like “Okay guys, we got one more chance to get this take” and we did it! At the end they were like “That’s the take!” It was an experience for sure.
You get to choose one artist to work on a single with, who would it be?
Josephine : We played with Jeremy Zucker last night and he was great. So we might make a tune with him.
Anthony : Would love to.
Lastly, if someone wanted to get to know Oh Wonder in 3 songs, what would they be?
Anthony and Josephine : All We Do, Hallelujah, and Drive.
