Malaya Disco Party comes to White Label Records for a special pop-up

Malaya Disco Party will be having a special Singapore pop-up at White Label Records on November 21st, 2019. Manning the decks for this edition are Rizki Maulana aka Lionel Rizki and Roshan Menon. To get to know them a little more, we had a chat ahead of the show.

Rizki Maulana

Lionel Rizki has always been immersed into the local music scene. Starting out as a roadie then a music photographer, a VJ and now a DJ! As a selector, his favoured sound is a range of disco and electronic sounds with groovy beats, horns and synths from the late 70s that’s guaranteed to get the dance floor down to boogie.

Hi Rizki! What’s the first record you ever bought?
I’ve always wanted to get asked by Vinyl of The Day about this. It’s Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King’s I’m In Love 12″ Single. However, i’m more drawn towards the B side, which has The Other Side of LoveImagine it being on the B and getting named The Other Side of Love. Also for the lyrics, “You showed me, the other side of love”. Amazing first purchase that got me hooked on disco.
Could you share with us on how you got into DJing?
Prior to DJing I was actually managing an Indonesian R&B artist named Emir Hermono. At the same time both Public School and SaturdaySelects asked me to join in and help them with management. Somehow, while attending one of Public School’s show, co-founders Rudy and Uzair asked me to give it a try. There i was mixing rubbish on wax at our event at a wet market called Sesi Kaki Lima. I fell in love with it. On the same day I purchased the record above. My life has changed since then.
Indonesian Disco, how did that get into mix?
I thought the name would have given a hint hahaha. Anyways, I’m actually an Indonesian living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It’s a way of me trying to reconnect / rediscover my roots after living away for so long. Also majorly influenced by Public School co-founder Renry Hollins who was playing Munir / Midnight Runners Indonesian disco edits.
We’d like to know more about SaturdaySelects and Public School, could you shed some insight?
SaturdaySelects is an agency, a platform for like minded creatives to share their output – be it music, design or even animation and also a record label. Public School is a DJ collective of music enthusiasts, regardless of the genre or the playing style, we play things that may be – too weird for mainstream clubs.

Although both SaturdaySelects and Public School‘s operational means are different. They’re both the same to me. Music geeks getting together in search of rare grooves and sharing it to other music geeks on the dance floor.
What can we expect from your set at White Label Records?
Earlier this year when I played White Label Records with Ruud you heard a lot of Japanese tracks coming from me. I think this time around you’ll be hearing lots of hindi disco. With some middle eastern tracks slipped in somewhere in the middle.

Roshan Menon

Roshan Menon is a photographer and DJ based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Having found himself with a camera in the middle of a growing underground music scene inspired Roshan into promoting his own parties with friends and other lesser known local artists. With an interest in themes of the creative culture, he has spearheaded the growth of his brand SaturdaySelects over the past 3 years expanding it into a music agency that focuses on event production, artist management and tour routings for travelling artists.
Hey Roshan! What’s the first record you ever bought?
Could you share with us on how you went from photography to DJing?
I was shooting a lot of live music shows and acts back in 2015/2016 and i slowly fell in love with the idea of being able to play tracks that i enjoy and want to share with the people who come to our shows.
What’s the most interesting thing about the creative culture in KL?
There’s always these talented people that we randomly bump into that are doing amazing and high quality work but haven’t really had the opportunity to get their work noticed, whether it’d be music, fashion, design & photography.
AlwaysSaturday is a venture of yours that focuses on bridging the gap between designers and music artists around the world through design and animation work. Tell us more about it.
AlwaysSaturday looks to provide an opportunity for upcoming designers and animators to showcase their work via our releases with SaturdaySelects. We’ve worked with clients such as Fred Perry, Impatient Sisters, Airliftz & Kyoto Protocol to the boundaries of a traditional music show by experimenting with new mediums of showcasing content to fit their needs! After all, our visuals helps compliment the sound of the musicians.
What can we expect from your set at the Malaya Disco Party at White Label Records?
Expect a lot of disco and soul and classic house tracks!
