Haruki Murakami is not only arguably the most experimental Japanese novelist to have been translated into English, he is also the most popular, with sales in the millions worldwide. The music-obsessed author has penned award-winning novels, such as Hear The Wind Sing, A Wild Sheep Chase and Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. His novels often used a large range of musical references from the jazz, classical and American pop genres, with many books from his ouevre titled as song references.
Haruki Murakami says he always listens to music when he works. “Music brings a warm glow to my vision, thawing mind and muscle from their endless wintering,” he writes in his 1985 novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
