#vinyloftheday: Friday Selekts with Diggy Dang (Reggae Rajahs, IND)

Every fortnight, we introduce an artiste on our Friday Selekts segment to tell us about the music in his collection. This week, we have Diggy Dang, a Singer/DJ/Guitarist/Promoter from New Delhi India. He’s a founding member of DJ Collective/Promoter crew, Reggae Rajahs and ska band The Ska Vengers. Diggy Dang has been promoting reggae music in India for the past 8 years. Along with the Reggae Rajahs he also runs a weekly online radio show called Pressure Drop, and organizes an international reggae festival called “Goa Reggae Sunsplash“.

“From start to finish a hip hop classic. I found this LP in London in 2012, and had to get a copy. If you listen to the third track on this album,” Rap Promoter”  you will know where I got my stage name from.”

“Another album I first heard on tape when I was a 8 year old lad growing up in London. This album is so important for Indian reggae scene. Apache Indian pioneered a sound called Bhangramuffin, mixing punjabi with jamaican patois, and also musically mixing bhangra dhol and tabla with dancehall.”

“This band is the reason why I got into reggae/dub/dancehall music. My guitar style and pretty much my lifestyle is strongly attributed to this album and this band in general. Their 3rd self titled album sampled 70s roots reggae, 80’s rub a dub dancehall mashed up with punk and ska. I bought the 20th anniversary edition of the LP last year.”

6) Marcia Griffiths – At Studio One (1970)

“This I picked up at a bargain sale in New York City for about $5. The sleeve was in a poor condition, but the vinyl sound was immaculate. Classic studio one sound from Jamaica with the sweet voice of Marcia Griffiths belting out hit after hit.”

“The Wailers debut album on Island records in 1973, is one of the most significant and ground breaking reggae albums to date. I own the original sleeve version of this album but have been on the look out for the limited edition zippo lighter LP sleeve of a “Catch A Fire” for a while.”
