On Diana’s Recent Vinyl Rotation: Top Ten albums of 2017.
It’s the final week of the year, so you know what time it is: Album Of The Year Time! There were a lot of interesting and captivating releases this year, here’s my pick for the Top Ten albums of 2017:
#10: Angles 9 – Disappeared Behind The Sun (Clean Feed Records)
The Swedish based Avantgarde Jazz Nonet released a terrific third album: The title track refers to people being taken away and being brought into solitary confinement, without their relatives and friends knowing their whereabouts. This context leads to a very melancholic and captivating track. The rest of the album is joyful and life-affirmative, highly energetic and has African, Middle Eastern and Swedish Folk influences. Even though I am not into big bands usually, this one is a sure shot!
#9: Sound Of New Soma – La Grande Bellezza (Tonzonen Records)
Perfect Neo-Krautrock, Space Rock and Psychedelic Rock by a German duo. Highly recommended!
#8: Jaimie Branch – Fly Or Die (International Anthem Records)
The Chicago born and New York based female trumpeter Jaimie Branch has released the most fun Jazz album this year. And the most badass cover!
#7: Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Luciferian Towers (Constellation Records)
The long-active band returns with another excellent Post Rock album with great Drone tinges. I know some people thought this is one of their weaker outlets, but it has been on heavy rotation here.
#6: Binker & Moses – Journey To The Mountain Of Forever (Gearbox Records)
Awesome Free/Spiritual/Avantgarde Jazz record by the London based duo Binker (Tenor Sax) and Moses (Drums). A fantasy journey put into a mesmerizing and delicate Jazz voyage.
#5: Nichole Mitchell – Mandorla Awakening II – Emerging Worlds (FPE Records)
A Science Fiction story in musical format enravels here: The flutist and composer takes us on a journey to the year 2099, where an old and decaying world is confronted with a new emerging egalitarian society.
The album starts off really sinister: dark and subdued percussion creates an eerie atmosphere, until electric guitar play takes over. And as we go on, the album stays as wild and energetic: some funky and soul-tinged parts Meet up with Cosmic Jazz and afrofuturistic Spoken Word parts – this makes the album immensely political and relevant as well in the present as in the futuristic setting. Highly recommended.
#4: Träd Gräs Och Stenar – Täk For Köffet (Subliminal Sounds)
The new album by one of my favorite Swedish Psychedelic groups is dedicated to the two late band members and fittingly melancholic and organic with a great Drone flavor.
#3: Blameful Isles – This Heart Of Our Heart (Urban Waves Records)
Free/ Spiritual Jazz from Sweden – one of my absolute favorites this year and very dear to my heart. It was limited to 150 copies and is completely sold out, but I’ll link the Bandcamp link so you can check it out. If you are into Free/Avantgarde/Spiritual Jazz, I recommend you to keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming release in the beginning of 2018 as well!
#2: Why? – Moh Lhean (Joyful Noise Recordings, Anticon)
Why? is one of my favorite bands of all time, even though I cannot put it into a genre. Somewhere between Singer-Songwriter, Indie Rock and Hip-Hop with a great pinch of quirkiness. The new album took my heart by storm as well.
#1: Father John Misty – Pure Comedy (Bella Union Records)
There’s no album that is more “2017” than this album. It captures the vibe and mood of the year perfectly and for me, it’s the most important album released this year. Singer-Songwriter Father John Misty has created a Magnum Opus here: dripping with irony and cynicism, he sketches a fitting image of today’s society. Beautiful compositions meet his magnificient vocals and subtle, but sublime instrumentation. Despite the length of the album, I returned to it again and again this year.
