17 Jun Asian Heavyweights Session ft. Public School (Fri, 21st June 2019)
With the relaunch of Vinyl of The Day #vinyloftheday platform we hit the ground running with the introduction of the “Asian Heavyweights” series, with each edition featuring a collective or DJ from our Southeast Asian neighbours.
Public School are purveyors of good vibes and a music collective based in Kuala Lumpur. They aim to diminish barriers in music by making it accessible to all walks of life. Made up of selectors with diverse styles, the collective introduces a wide range of music through their DJ sets from organic grooves of Arabic disco and Southeast Asian funk, to the coldest wave and syncopated left-field techno.
Ruud has been a resident DJ in KL for over half a decade and currently heads Public School and runs listening room and event space fono while balancing a day job as creative director in advertising. His past endeavours in music include setting up and running music collectives Deer Society and Indiego, both in Kuala Lumpur. From featuring at festivals and shows around the world as a performer, to being a resident at various bars and clubs including Zouk, he now focuses on recreating a new auditory landscape of his city focusing on the rare grooves and exciting new acts in his own venue.
On the road as often as possible, his style of music is as eclectic as his travels resulting in a blend of familiar genres, mixed with emerging sounds from big cities, to tracks released 2 hours ago on Soundcloud, and old records found in the crates of Shimokitazawa. The dizzying description aside, his sets are always soulful and groovy with surprises slipped in.
About Lionel Rizki
Lionel Rizki has always been immersed into the local music scene, starting out as a roadie, a music photographer, a VJ, bartender now, his final evolution (thus far): a DJ!
As a selector, his favoured sound is a range of disco and electronic sounds with groovy beats, horns and synths from the late 70s that ís guaranteed to get the dance floor down to boogie. As a Japanophile, audiences are often treated to the odd city pop single, Shibuya kei track and event themes from recent Nippon productions.
Expect nusantara disco to be included into his selections, paying homage to his roots. He is also the head of Marketing and PR for SaturdaySelects, a collective, platform and record label that consists of creatives & musicians from around the world and a member of Public School, a collective focusing on leftfield music which are deemed unacceptable to be played at clubs.
