18 Oct #vinyloftheday – Pushin’ On Crew Interview
As purveyors of hip hop, funk and soul, the fine gents of the Pushin’ On Crew are more than well-versed in all things vinyl. Indeed, for DJs Tom Shellsuit, Chunk, Dave Code, and musician, Masterpiece, studying and perfecting grooves is more than just an artistic concern; it’s a matter of principle. In the latest #vinyloftheday x ZIGGY collab, the wielders of all that funk schooled us on why vinyl spits out the best sound, opened up about finding their prized vinyls and took us down memory lane. As Tom Shellsuit recounts, a shared love for vinyl colours the crew’s very origins. “We met at record stores, actually”, he recalls, adding that Etrax was the converging point that brought the members together. As for what drew them to vinyl, the guys are emphatic that the “format” and the “big visuals” definitely called out to them. And on a more technical and level, Dave Code affirms that wanting to manipulate songs in a “hip hop sense” meant that it was vinyl or nothing. When it comes to dropping the funk, the guys are resolutely on point. “As a crew, funk and soul was the basis”, swears Tom Shellsuit who discovered funk by digging for hip hop and drum ‘n’ bass samples. “It seemed like a good direction to go”, he reminisces. We most definitely agree. And to drive home the beating heart of the crew, Tom leaves with us this mantra, “Funk is for the party”, which Chunk rounds off with, “Just, good groovy music”. Again, they couldn’t be more right.
